Your Lucrative Retirement Portfolio: Good Health and Energy

Dear Friends,

Is there anything more restful than sleeping with a baby on your heart?

Bruce and I just spent 5 weeks in Italy helping out with the care for our new grandson, and while we did plenty of food shopping, cooking, and baby holding, we also got in some good solid rest: we slept extra long hours, we meditated, did restorative yoga, and we did nothing. 2020 was so intense! Bruce was burning the candle at both ends with long work hours, extra stress at his job, and less good quality sleep than usual. High levels of stress for extended periods can deplete our life force and the result is a deterioration of vitality and health.

There are easy, low tech ways of preserving and protecting our precious vitality and these traditional practices are as relevant today as they have been for thousands of years. Prevention is good medicine and adding rest in at the appropriate time it has long term positive affects. In Ayurvedic philosophy it is held that forty days of rest for a new mother after the birth of her baby will result in forty years of good health.

Next time you want to go to bed a little earlier remember that while you do almost nothing your lucrative retirement portfolio--good health and energy--is growing! Getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night keeps our brain healthy, helps us lose weight, helps our moods, and when we're well rested we're much more productive and creative.

Weirdly, for many of us, resting can be hard to do. We exercise and try to eat well, but skimp on sleep. We say to ourselves, "I can get by on 5 or 6 hours of sleep", or we exist with a "wired and tired" feeling that we just can't shake.

This Memorial Day Weekend take the courageous act of resting seriously! Summer is a great time to chill out and relax. Sleep in, take it easy, enjoy being with your loved ones. All these things can have incredible long range positive affects on your health.
